Is a phrase I first noticed reading a biography of a very successful New Zealand Rugby player Richie McCaw. In it he had a daily process in which he would start a new page in an a5 notebook with the words Begin again. That would get him to re-set himself to what he wanted to do and achieve daily. Previous defeats are relegated to the past, he can freshen up challenges that may be ongoing and he got balance on victories of the previous day.

It is a phrase I got taken with when I first read it.

Writing it down can be personally liberating.

Begin again doesn’t have to be starting from scratch, they are just new beginnings from where you are now, using what you have learnt so far. Begin again can also be great for when things are going well, as you can keep freshening things up and evolving them into something even greater.

For lots of us we have many begin again moments in our lives. Most the 1st of January is a very popular day for beginning again and resets, even if for most cases temporary. End of months, new weeks, a new morning can all be begin agains for us. Even stepping out of a conversation for 5 minutes can do the same thing.

Though often, when we get past this point, in the majority of times our precondition habits and routines kick straight back in. We then just end up doing the same as we were doing previously.

If you want to begin again or re-set, you need a procedure. A straightforward way of doing this is asking yourself questions pertinent to the situation or aim.

How can you refocus on what do YOU want?

What do you need to do to put what has happened into the past?

What needs to be mended? How might I do that? Who does that involve?

What things do you need to watch out for, so history does not repeat itself?

What resources would be of use to get the outcomes you want?

These are just ideas to help you develop your own process. Questions you create for yourself will naturally tailor to benefit you the most. Any you come up with, please share below.

Just remember you can begin again at any point you choose. And it can just start by writing the words Begin Again.
